You may be wondering "Who is the Self Help Goddess?" Thanks for asking!
My name is Mary Knebel, and I'm known as the Self Help Goddess because I love reading and tracking down the best self help books and resources to help others create their ideal lives. This website is something I have wanted to do for years, and is truly the fulfillment of one of my biggest dreams! Keep reading for more information about me...
Here's the short version:
I'm a coach, author of Secrets to Creating Your Ideal Life, faculty member at Good Vibe University, absolute Francophile, self help and spirituality "junkie", and overall lover of life! Some of my other interests include: nature, yoga, Mexican food, sappy romance movies, travelling, warm weather, chocolate, and great conversation!
I have double degrees in Human & Organization Development, and French from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Following college, I moved to Paris, France, where I worked as a legal translator for a major international law firm. I spent two years in Paris, but then decided to return to the United States and ended up in Washington, DC, where I have worked in both non-profit and corporate organizations in various roles dealing with Human Resources and Recruiting... and now I am here, as the Self Help Goddess!
If you're curious and want the full story, here's the longer version:
You've obviously figured out that I love self help books and programs, but it really goes much deeper than that. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been absolutely drawn to and fascinated by the world of self help. When I was young and learning to read, I always wanted the latest self help book (well, that and the latest Babysitter's Club book). I can't explain it, but I’ve always had this burning desire to know myself at a very deep level, discover what my wildest dreams and passions are, and figure out a way to be the best possible version of myself and bring all my dreams to reality. Living a life that doesn't bring out the fullest version of myself or doesn't allow me to pursue my passions just does not appeal to me AT ALL!
I attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated with degrees in Human & Organizational Development, and French. While all of my friends were getting post-college jobs in the US, I knew that France was really where I wanted to be. (Besides self help, France and speaking French has been my other huge passion since I was a child). With nothing more than a few huge suitcases, a ton of optimism, some healthy naivety, and a pretty good introduction to the French language, I took off for France and ended up spending two of the best years of my life there. I settled in one of the most chic quartiers in Paris, found a job doing legal translation in a well-known law firm, and seriously had the time of my life!
Eventually it was time to return to the US (I still ask myself why I came back), and I landed in Washington, DC. Eventually I settled in Dupont Circle, an area of DC which not so coincidentally reminds a lot of people of where I lived in Paris (go, figure!). I spent a few years in both the non-profit and corporate worlds doing Human Resources and Recruiting. I enjoyed this, but I finally decided it was time to nurture my dream of having my own website dedicated to self help and the best self help resources I have tracked down over the years. And before you know it, the world of the Self Help Goddess was born!
I hope you enjoy this site as much as I have enjoyed creating it. Check back often for updates and additions to the site!
